The day Nellie went back to school

I was teaching my year 1 (5-6 year olds) class a few years ago a topic called ‘What was it like when you were young?’ As part of the topic I invited four older people, including Nellie, in to talk to the children. They each had a group of about 7 children. The idea was that they would talk about what they remembered about life when they were young. Nellie was a bit nervous and thought she wouldn’t know what to say but i assured her that the children would love to hear her stories. Sure enough she started with saying how she had a coal fire. “What’s coal?” asked a child. So she described it and how the coalman brought it. Then she told them that the milkman would bring bottles of milk and leave them on the doorstep. “Why didn’t you get it from the supermarket? “ another child asked. So Nellie explained there were no supermarkets. And so on. She really enjoyed herself that day and the children were so enthralled that they didn’t notice the bell for play time!
